From Proto-Finnic *kupla, probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kupla. Related to Estonian kubel, Karelian kupla, Livvi kubl and probably Inari Sami koble (roe pouch), Eastern Mari куво̄л (kuvōl) and Mansi [script needed] (kɛ̮wl-, to swim, to float), possibly also Hungarian hólyag (bladder).
