Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish قوریمق (korumak), itself from Common Turkic *kōrï-. Cognate with Azerbaijani qorumaq (to protect), Old Turkic 𐰸𐰆𐰺 (korï-, to protect), Uzbek qoʻrimoq (to protect). Compare also Mongolian хорих (xorix, to forbad; prison), Nanai хориори (xoriori, to protect).
