Estonian

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *kanto, probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kanta, the same root as kand (“heel”) (Proto-Finnic *kanta). Another theory suggests a borrowing from Proto-Indo-Iranian *skandʰás, compare Sanskrit स्कन्ध (skandhá).

The irregular change in the first syllable *a > ä has occurred to differentiate from kand (“heel”), though many dialects retain the original vowel.

Cognates include Finnish kanto, Livonian kand, Võro kand, Votic kanto, Ingrian kando, Veps kand, Karelian kando, Ludian kand; Northern Sami guottu, Lule Sami guottoj, Pite Sami guoddo, Southern Sami gåådte (from Proto-Samic *kuontōj); Erzya кандо (kando, “block, log”), Moksha канда (kanda, “block, log”).
