Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *juma-, possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic *juma- (“stuck”). "wood borer", "woodworm" is possibly from how the animal appears to be stuck. Possibly related to Erzya ёмамс (jomams, “disappear”).
