From Ottoman Turkish استعفا‎, from Arabic اِسْتِعْفَاء‎ (istiʿfāʾ), related to عَفْو‎ (ʿafw) and عَفَا‎ (ʿafā). Compare Azerbaijani istefa, Urdu اِسْتِعْفا‎ (istīfā).
