Learned borrowing from New Latin ischaemia, from Ancient Greek ἴσχαιμος (ískhaimos, “stoppage of blood flow”), from ῐ̓́σχω (ískhō), ἰσχάνω (iskhánō, “to hold back, restrain; to stay, stop”) (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *seǵʰ- (“to hold; to overcome”)) + αἷμᾰ (haîma, “blood”) (possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *say- (“thick or viscous liquid”)).
