ihretwegen

German

Etymology

Shortened from von ihren Wegen.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈiːʁətˌveːɡən/, /ˌiːʁətˈveːɡən/
  • (file)

Adverb

ihretwegen

  1. because of her, for her sake
    Das ist alles ihretwegen passiert.
All of this happened because of her.
  2. because of them, for their sake
    Das ist alles ihretwegen passiert.
All of this happened because of them.
  3. as far as she is concerned (she doesn't mind if); for all she cares
    Ihretwegen kannst du mitkommen.
As far as she is concerned, you can come with us.

Usage notes

Colloquially, this term is usually constructed with the separated form (especially in the southern language area), thus wegen ihr (singular) and wegen ihnen (plural) instead of ihretwegen. In sense 3, however, both are equally common in the vernacular.
