Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *huttu, possibly an old past passive participle of a verb borrowed from Baltic (compare Lithuanian šusti (to stew)). Cognate to Karelian huttu, Ludian huttu. May also be related to Proto-Permic *šyd (soup), if it is derived from the same Baltic root.[1]
