From Proto-Germanic *helaną, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (“to hide, conceal”). Cognate with Old Frisian hela, Old Saxon helan, Dutch helen, Old High German helan (German hehlen); and with Latin cēlō, Ancient Greek καλύπω (kalúpō, “I hide”). Compare helian, hulu, hol.
