Etymology

Possibly ultimately from Sanskrit हृदय (hṛdaya, soul, mind, spirit, literally heart), according to Zorc (1982). On surface analysis possibly from hi- + daya. Compare Pali hadaya (feeling, literally heart), Old Javanese ḥṛdaya (mind), and Indonesian daya. Many sources say it is from Cebuano haraya, but Zorc (1982) does not believe so.
