halu
Finnish
Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *halu, probably borrowed and derived from Proto-Germanic *halōną. The meaning "to fetch, get" that the Germanic word appears to have had could also explain halata (“to hug”) with the sense development "to go get > pull towards oneself > embrace", suggesting that it is of the same origin as halata (“to want”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈhɑlu/, [ˈhɑlu]
- Rhymes: -ɑlu
- Syllabification(key): ha‧lu
Usage notes
- "for X" = the illative, allative (general) or translative case (to emphasize the purpose or goal), "to (verb)" = the first infinitive (general) or the translative case of the -minen noun (to emphasize the purpose or goal).
