Probably from Middle Dutch garve, from Old Dutch garva, from Proto-West Germanic *garbōn (“bundle, thing seized together”), from Proto-Germanic *garbō. The first attestation of the word with the meaning "sheaf" is from the year 1170 A.D.[1][2][3][4] Cognate with German Garbe, French gerbe, Catalan garba.
