From Proto-Vietic *p-kəːs (“to entrust; to send”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(b)kəl() ~ *(b)kəəls (“to give; to make over”); cognate with Arem /pakəːjˀ/, Mon ကဵု (kɒ, “to give”), Khmer ប្រគល់ (brâkôl, “to hand over”).
Alternatively, a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 寄 (SV: kí).
