Etymology

Probably from Arabic أَعْماق‎ (ʾaʿmāq, “depths”), plural of عُمْق‎ (ʿumq). Alternatively from the nominalised adjective عَمِيق‎ (ʿamīq, “deep”), or from a blend of them. The forms would have merged phonetically in Maltese. Compare għammieq.
