From Proto-Italic *fraksinos, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰr̥Hǵ-s-inos, adjective of *bʰerHǵós (birch). Cognate with, भूर्ज (bhūrjá, Himalayan birch) (Betula utilis), English birch, Russian берёза (berjóza).
