Borrowed from English diphtheria, from French diphthérie, coined 1857 by Pierre Bretonneau; from Ancient Greek διφθέρα (diphthéra, prepared hide, leather), for the tough membrane that forms in the throat. Bretonneau earlier used diphthérite, from which diphtheritis.
