From Proto-Germanic *dailijaną, from *dailiz, from Indo-European. Cognate with Old Frisian dēla, Old Saxon dēljan (Dutch delen), Old High German teilen (German teilen), Old Norse deila (Swedish dela), Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌹𐌻𐌾𐌰𐌽 (dailjan). The Indo-European root is also the source of Baltic *daili- (Lithuanian dailiti (“divide”)), Slavic *delъ (Old Church Slavonic дѣлити (děliti, “divide”), Russian делить (delitʹ)).
