From lucharniego or nocharniego (“nocturnal”), applied to greyhounds. Compare Catalan xarnego/xarnec.

(often derogatory, Catalonia) a person who is half Catalan and half from another ethnolinguistic group
(often derogatory, Catalonia) a Spanish person who lives in Catalonia but immigrated from another part of Spain and cannot speak Catalan
