Borrowed from Lombard brughera or Occitan bruguièra, from Vulgar Latin *brūcāria or Medieval Latin brūgāria (heath), a derivative of Late Latin *brūcus (heather), of Gaulish origin, from Proto-Celtic *wroikos. By surface analysis, brugo + -iera.

Also cognate to Catalan bruguera, French bruyère and Norman brüethe.
