Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish ازمق (azmak, to leave the way, go astray, act outrageously, go mad), from Proto-Turkic *āŕ- (to go astray, lose one's way). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰀𐰕 (az /āz-/, to go astray, to lose one's way), Bashkir аҙыу (aðıw, to lead immoral life, degenerate), Southern Altai азар (azar, to astray).
