From Old French acheter, from Vulgar Latin *accattāre or *accaptāre, present active infinitive of *accattō or *accaptō, from Latin ad + captō. Cognate with French acheter (“to buy”), Sicilian accattari (“to buy”), Neapolitan accattà (“to buy”), Corsican accattà (“to buy”). Compare English cater.
