anti-feature (plural anti-features)

  1. Functionality that the seller of a product (typically technology) will charge users to not include.
    The printer's anti-features made it hardly worth using: the small $40 ink cartridges get blacklisted after first use to prevent refilling.
    • "DRM and Treacherous Computing systems are, in many ways, extreme examples of antifeatures. Users don't want either and they are hugely expensive and extremely difficult for developers to implement."[1]
    • "We evaluate software and hardware not simply on which has more features but also on which has fewer antifeatures."[2]
