Etymology

From the first three letters of the Arabic alphabet, Arabic أَلِف بَاء تَاء‎ (ʾalif bāʾ tāʾ), coined by Paul Rodriguez Verzosa in 1914 presumably under the erroneous assumption that Baybayin was derived from it. Compare Malay alif-ba-ta.
