Borrowed from English algorithm, from Medieval Latin algorismus, from Arabic الخَوَارِزْمِيّ (al-ḵawārizmiyy), name of the Persian mathematician al-Khwārizmī, whose name literally means "person from Chorasmia". The English form was influenced by unrelated Ancient Greek ἀριθμός (arithmós, “number”). Doublet of algarismo.
