From Proto-Albanian *auK-(ul-), from Proto-Indo-European *Houk (“cold, frost”). Cognate to Armenian ոյծ (oyc, “cold, frost”).[1] Also compare Hittite 𒂊𒅗 (eka, “ice”), Latvian auksts. Possible relation to Proto-Germanic *jakulaz (“ice, glacier”) (cf. Old Norse jaki, jǫkull (“glacier”)) is uncertain.
