From English abolitionism, from abolition, either from Middle French abolition, or directly from Latin abolitiō (“abolishing, annulling, abolition”), from aboleō (“I destroy, abolish, terminate”), from both ab- (“away”), from ab (“from, away from, of”), from Proto-Italic *ab, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂epó (“off, away”) + and *oleō (“increase, grow”), from Proto-Italic *oleō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂oléye-, the o-grade causative of *h₂el- (“grow, nourish”). Equivalent to abolisjon + -isme.
