Attested as ZWARTSLUISJE (HET) in 1851. Compound of zwart (“black”) and the diminutive form of sluis (“lock, sluice”). Named after a nearby sluice. Compare Blauwe Sluis, Blauwesluis, Rode Sluis and Zwartsluis.
