Etymology

As the name of the river (Vantaanjoki), the name Vantaa originates (through the genitive forms *Vantaan < *Vanantaan) as a reduced form of earlier *Vanantaka, which is related to the name of a village Vanaantaka. Both are from *Vanajantaka, meaning "behind [south of] Vanaja (Vanajavesi)", as named by the Tavastians.

The name was for the city taken in 1972 from river Vantaa which runs through the city. Until then the municipality was known as Helsingin maalaiskunta ("Rural municipality of Helsinki").
