Etymology

From Arabic سَيِّدُنَا‎ (sayyidunā, literally “our master”), used among Arabic-speaking Muslims as a general title for prophets and saints. After the re-Christianisation it was probably identified with Latin dominus (noster) and therefore restricted to Jesus. Analysable as sid +‎ -na.
