First attested as cybde in 1307. Etymology unknown. Proposed derivations from Latin cippus (stake), sibbe (family, clan) or Middle Dutch sijp (watercourse) are incompatible with the oldest attestations of the toponym.

Etymology

Probably from Sibbe (farmstead in Finland), whence also Sibelius. Alternatively a clipping of Sibelius + -e, though this would be expected to produce a jäännöslopuke. Compare also Mosse (Mozart).
