From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skaujás, from Proto-Indo-European *skow-y-o-s, from *skw-oy- (needle, prickle; thorn), from *ksew- (to scrape, shave, sharpen), from *kes- (to scrape, comb).

Compare Albanian hu (stake, pole; penis) (from Proto-Albanian *skuna < *skuja + *-na, from Proto-Indo-European *skow-y-o-s).
