Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *erelis, *arelis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃érō.
Cognate with Lithuanian erẽlis (“eagle”), arẽlis (dialectal), Latvian ērglis (“eagle”) and Old Prussian arelie (“eagle”). The Proto-Slavic form comes from a Proto-Balto-Slavic *arelis (cf. Lithuanian arẽlis (“eagle”) (dialectal), Old Prussian arelie (“eagle”)) from the earlier and original *erelis.
