Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Unknown. Possibly a borrowing from Baltic: compare Lithuanian šonine (annex, side chamber), from šonas (side). Has also been compared also with Permic words meaning 'warm': Komi-Permyak шоныд (šonyd, warm), Udmurt шуныт (šunyt)[1]. Both comparisons, the Baltic[2] and the Uralic[3], are both semantically and phonetically unlikely.
