Proto-Celtic
Etymology
Possibly from earlier *(s)tannos, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)dʰnwos, *(s)dʰonu (“fir”). Cognate with Ancient Greek θάμνος (thámnos, “thicket”), Latin femur (“thigh”), Old High German tanna (“fir wood”), Old Saxon danna (“pine”), Albanian thanë (“cranberry bush”), Avestan 𐬚𐬀𐬥𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭𐬆 (θanuuarə, “bow”), Sanskrit धनु (dhanu, “bow”)) and Hittite [script needed] (tanau, “fir”).
