The atonal Hanyu Pinyin romanization of the Mandarin pronunciation of Chinese 青浦 (Qīngpǔ, literally “Verdant Bank”), a 1542 combination of the name of 青龍 (Qīnglóng), the principal local town at the time, and 浦 (pǔ, literally “riverbank”) after the many streams flowing into the Wusong River (now Suzhou Creek) in the area.
