From being a hominid (Homo, from Latin homo (“man”)) discovered in the Chinese province of Heilongjiang (“黑龍江”).
longi, from Mandarin 龍／龙 (lóng, “dragon”). From Chinese 黑龍江／黑龙江 (Hēilóngjiāng, “Heilongjiang”, literally “Black Dragon River”).
