Etymology
Short for l-Għid il-Kbir (literally “the great feast”), which is still used, but is now redudant. The equivalent term الْعِيدُ الْكَبِير (al-ʿīdu l-kabīr) is also used by Arabic-speaking Christians. Eventually from Arabic عِيد (ʿīd, “feast, festival”).
