First attested as mi in 1119. Derived from the hydronym Meije, which potentially derives in turn from Proto-Germanic *mîgô (“urine”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *ja-. Compare Mijdrecht, Mijnden, Oostmijzen, Misson and Mite.
