Recorded as Cuningestone 1086 (Domesday Book), and Calde Kuningeston in 1202 (the order was reversed at a later date) [1]; from Old English cald (cold) + Old Norse konungr + Old English tūn (the king's manor), "cold" relating to its exposed location.
