Etymology

First mentioned as Budusin in 1002. The name is of uncertain origin, but probably of Sorbian/Slavic origin, with suggestions including:

  • Budetzsch, Bud, Bod, meaning "border town"
  • Named after a medieval Slavic prince Budissentius, Budestaus
  • From the feminine personal name Budiša or Budy
  • Bautzen legend/folk etymology claims that a traveling pregnant duchess gave birth in present-day Bautzen, after which the rushing husband asked bude syn? (will it be a son?).[1]
