Baphomet
English

A 19th century image of a Sabbatic Goat created by Éliphas Lévi.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin Baphometh, deriving from Occitan Bafometz. Clearly a corruption of Andalusian Arabic مَحُمَّدْ (“Maḥummad”), ultimately deriving from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad) (compare Old Catalan Mafumet and Old Portuguese Mafomat), although other sources have been suggested. Doublet of mammet and Muhammad.
