Etymology

Borrowed from Old French -ier, from Latin -arius. Doublet of the inherited suffix -aio.

Suffix

-iere m (feminine -iera)

  1. Used to form masculine nouns (often of French origin) that represent a person who makes or sells a specified article; -er, -or.
    ‎giardino (“garden”) + ‎-iere → ‎giardiniere (“gardener”)
    ‎gioiello (“jewel”) + ‎-iere → ‎gioielliere (“jeweller”)
  2. Suffix of a few -ere verbs.
