Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄲᅳᆯ〮 (Yale: spúl), from Old Korean.

Etymological details

Beyond Middle Korean, the Old Korean ancestor of this word, tentatively reconstructed as <*sèpúl>, was the first element of the highest rank of nobility in the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla. This title was variably written with Chinese characters as 舒發翰 (MC ɕɨʌ pʉɐt̚ ɦɑn) or 舒弗邯 (MC ɕɨʌ pɨut̚ ɦɑn), representing the sound of the ancient Korean word (note that Korean final *-l, which does not exist in Chinese, is customarily written with -t̚) or as 角干 (MC kˠʌk̚ kɑn) or 角粲 (MC kˠʌk̚ t͡sʰɑnH), using the Chinese word (MC kˠʌk̚, “horn”) to represent the meaning of <*sèpúl>.

However, the same title is also written in forms that imply an initial *i-, such as 伊伐湌 (MC ʔiɪ bʉɐt̚ t͡sʰɑn) or 伊罰干 (MC ʔiɪ bʉɐt̚ kɑn). This may reflect an alternative word for “horn”, apparently related to as <*sèpúl>, which was lost by Middle Korean.
