부릅뜨다

Korean

Etymology

From 부르— (bureu-, “to be full, bulging”) + 뜨— (tteu-, “to open (eyes)”).

tteuda was ptu- in Middle Korean, hence the intrusive -p in this compound. Non-word-medial pt was reduced to tense tt, as in Modern tteuda.
