Etymology

Of native Korean origin. The religious meaning is the original definition. It is unclear why the Seoul definition pertains to the shaman's clientele, while the southern definition is about the shamans themselves.

Revised Romanization? dan-gol
Revised Romanization (translit.)? dangol

Noun

단골 (dan-gol)

  1. (Seoul) The clientele of a shaman, who regularly consult the shaman for ritual purposes
  2. (southern) A hereditary village priest who officiates rituals at a fixed shrine
  3. (By extension) A regular, either a regular customer from a business's perspective or a regularly visited business from a customer's perspective

Usage notes

Due to the decline of southern shamanism and competition from the more common Seoul term 제가집 (jegajip), the word is nowadays rarely used in its shamanic meaning. Most Koreans will know the word by the meaning of "regular".
