Etymology
A proposed alchemical symbol for platinum, derived from the symbols for the planetary metals gold (☉) and iron (♂), as platinum (previously known as 'white gold') was often found mixed with iron. This symbol for the newly discovered metal platinum was created in order to have a symbol to apply to the newly discovered planet Uranus.
Usage notes
While neither symbol is exclusive, ⛢ is more common in astronomy and ♅ in astrology.
