1. (archaic) ചില്ലക്ഷരം (vowelless consonant) of consonant മ.
2. This letter, like other chillus, never occurs as the first letter of any Malayalam word.

Eg. ഹന്തുൔ: /hɐn̪t̪um̩/ or /hɐn̪t̪uᵊm/ (meaning: 'to kill')

• It's used instead of the ം when the preceding consonant was having a vowel other than the inherited vowel /ɐ/.

• ം (formerly wasn't used with a consonant if it was followed by a vowel other than the inherited vowel i.e. /ɐ/)
