From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀺𑀩𑁆𑀪𑀸 (jibbhā), from Sanskrit जिह्वा (jihvā, “tongue”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́iźʰwáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́iȷ́ʰwáH (compare Avestan 𐬵𐬌𐬰𐬎𐬎𐬁 (hizuuā), Persian زوان (zavân)), from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s. Compare Hindi जीभ (jībh, “tongue”) and Punjabi ਜੀਭ (jībh, “tongue”).
