Tommy Playboy (1999 – April 1, 2023) was an American transgender model, choreographer, and Ballroom performer from The Bronx, New York City.[1][2][3][4]

Career

Dance and film

Playboy was a choreographer and backup dancer for Princess Nokia.[5][6][7][8]

Playboy was an active dancer and competitor in the Ball scene, utilizing moves like vogueing and waacking in their dances.[9][10][11]

Playboy danced in Thalía's music video for “La Luz” and appeared in Angelfish: a New York Love Story.[5][12][13] Playboy choreographed Annalise Azadian's music video, “Life of the Party” and Andrea Valle's music video, “Lovergirl”.[14][15][16] Playboy worked on Chynna Rogers' short film, Drug Opera Film.[1][17][18]

Modeling

Playboy modeled for Chromat,[19] Feroce Magazine,[20] Telfar Clemens,[21][2] Geoffrey Mac,[2] Raleigh Workshop,[2] Jane Wade,[2] Gypsy Sport,[22][23] House of Aama,[24] MEFeater,[25] Fendi,[26] No Sesso,[27] and Shayne Oliver.[2] In 2021, they shot a campaign for Telfar X Moose Knuckles Canada x Anonymous Club.[28][29][1] In 2022, their outfit from Afropunk was featured in Vogue.[30]

Through modeling Playboy met and became friends with celebrities like Alexa Demie.[31]

Community work

Playboy was a leader in the queer community. Playboy was dedicated to a little sister and nephew to whom they were a guardian.[2] Playboy regularly contributed to the annual Celebration of Black Trans Women Cookout in Bed-Stuy's Herbert Von King Park,[32] the Brooklyn Trans March,[33] as well as the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020.[1]

Death

On April 1, 2023, around 10:40 pm, NYPD officers responded to a call for a person needing medical assistance in the vicinity of Seventh Avenue and West 42nd Street, in Times Square.[34] The police and EMS found Playboy on the northbound 2 line subway tracks and pronounced them dead at the scene.[35] The cause of their death is under investigation. Playboy was 23 when they died.[36][31]
