Niro Ceramic Group

Niro Ceramic Group is a tile manufacturer headquartered in Shah Alam, Malaysia. First established in 1979 in Switzerland, Niro Ceramic Group is a manufacturer in the tiles industry producing homogeneous tiles.[1][2] Niro Ceramic Group operates internationally with a network spanning over 100 countries. They offer a variety of products made from porcelain under the brand names of Niro Granite, Zirconio, and Portino to glass mosaics by Muzze Da as well as bathroom sanitary ware by Orin.[1] The rapid growth in the Asian markets led to the establishment of Niro Ceramic Malaysia in 1988, which later expanded to Indonesia (1995), China (2001), Vietnam (2010), India (2011), Spain (2012), and the Philippines (2016).[3][4][2] Niro Ceramic Group invented Slip-Stop, a technology that allows a tile to be slip resistant while maintaining a smooth rather than rough surface.[5] Slip-Stop is a first in Malaysia; unlike conventional anti-slip tiles, the Slip-Stop range is smooth to the touch when dry, making it easy to wipe and clean, and will only activate the anti-slip effect upon the tile surface getting wet - making it suitable for indoor and outdoor spaces.[5]

History

Johan Nyrop, inventor of the spray drying machine formed A/S NIRO ATOMIZER in Denmark in 1933. With the availability of the spray dryer, A/S Niro went on to build a new factory in Cresciano, Switzerland to manufacture porcelain tiles with spray dryer technology.

Marketed under the brand name of Niro Granite, Niro Ceramic Group's first manufacturing plant was established in 1979 in Switzerland to announce the presence of porcelain tiles to the world.[2] Since then, a variety of tiles has been exported across the globe, and rapid growth in the Asian markets eventually led to the success of the Niro Ceramic establishment in Malaysia and Indonesia.[6]

Brands

Niro Granite

Niro Granite is the flagship brand of ceramic and porcelain floor and wall tiles from Niro Ceramic Group.[6] They have been around for more than 40 years, with the first manufacturing plant established in 1979 in Switzerland.[7] Niro Granite were the creators of Slim, the first tile in Malaysia that have a thickness of only 6mm.[8] Slim tiles weigh only slightly over 1 kilogram per square foot and are 50 percent lighter than regular-sized tiles that are 11-18 millimeters thick.[8] Slim tiles are able to be installed over old tiles for a "tile-on-tile" installation, saving time and resources by eliminating the process of hacking old tiles, and also helps in creating less waste.[8]

Portino

Portino is a ceramic and porcelain tiles brand established in 2015 under Niro Ceramic Group. Portino is inspired by a fishing village called Portus Delphini (Port of Dolphin) or better known now as Portofino in Italy. The village is named after the dolphins that frolicked in the waters of the Tigullian Gulf. It has a mix of charming yet modern architecture that leaves a sensual experience to its visitors.[9]

Zirconio

Zirconio is a Spanish ceramic and porcelain tile brand that was established in 1965. Zirconio was acquired by Niro Ceramic Group in 2013.[10] Zirconio – the Quintessential – offers tiles with a strong Spanish heritage. Zirconio has the capacity to manufacture seven million square meters of tiles per annum.[10] Zirconio experienced many firsts, being the first factory to produce double-fired tiles in 1979 and the first to establish its own in-house glaze and design development. The brand was the first to launch commercially viable white-body wall tiles and the pioneer to implement digital decoration print technology in 2001.[11]

Muzze Da

Muzze Da is a glass mosaics brand established by Niro Ceramic Group. Muzze Da – The Essence of Tiles – are specially selected and crafted mosaics by Italian designers to highlight Niro Granite and Zirconio tile collections and provide architectural solutions for walls and floors by adding highlights to wall designs. Muzze Da’s mosaics are produced in different materials, colour tones, shapes and sizes to meet the design concept and ambiences of customers.[12]

Orin

Orin is a sanitary ware brand established by Niro Ceramic Group in 2003. Inspired by the tagline “Sanctuary of Indulgence”, Orin's philosophy is that one’s bathroom is a personal space for relaxation, and should be a sanctuary of comfort with its product design, allowing one to luxuriate in aesthetic beauty and solace while benefiting from their innovative features.[13]

Creative Lab

Creative Lab is a home-improvement retail chain based in Malaysia. Creative Lab is the retail arm of Niro Ceramic Group, with 41 outlets across Malaysia (as at April 2021).[14] Before Creative Lab, Niro Ceramic Group's showroom was called Niro Tile & Bath.[15] Creative Lab emerged in 2018, bringing advanced technology into the mix with the development of a proprietary 3D design software called ViSoft, named after its technology partner, a German software producer for the tile and sanitary industry.[14] With the help of Creative Lab's interior designers, customers receive free 3D Interior Designing services according to their floor plan so that they can visualize their chosen tiles for their project.[16][17][2] Since its inception, Creative Lab has expanded to open international outlets in Vietnam and Indonesia.[18]

Recent developments

Niro Ceramic Group plans to float the company in the local Malaysian stock exchange sometime in the future to elevate its profile as a prominent ceramic tile player in Asean. Niro Ceramic Group Managing Director Ian Kok said the group initially planned for the corporate exercise in 2023 but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.[20]

Niro Ceramic Group announced their Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for their Niro Granite and Portino brands of tiles.[21] Their EPD illustrates the environmental impact of their products. According to Managing Director Ian Kok, "As part of Niro Ceramic Group's commitment to sustainability, we are striving to provide more environmentally conscious options internationally for building products, and this EPD is just the start for us."[22]. Niro Ceramic Group underwent a full cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment conducted by SCS Global Services (SCS) to achieve their EPD.[21]
